The Turkish port town of Bodrum is situated on Turkey’s southwest coast, surrounded by the foothills of the Taurus Mountains. The site of Bodrum is shaped by the typical low-lying white buildings of the region. The city lies on a bay that forms a natural harbor in the Marina today, many yacht and sailing ships are moored. Due to its location on a beautiful coastline with many sandy beaches and its many attractions the city has developed in recent years become a popular destination for tourists. About 30 km from Bodrum International Airport is also located in the city.
Bodrum has a long history: in ancient times was located in the city, which was then Halicarnassus, a well-known port. Especially in the era of Greek rule in Bodrum was a major center for shipbuilding. Even today in the small yards of the city the traditional wooden boats in the region are built by hand.
The ancient Myndos Gate and some parts of the ancient city walls of Bodrum have been preserved to this day and remember the former importance of the city. In the foothills of the Taurus Mountains lie the remains of the ancient theater of the city, from it you have a beautiful view over the bay of Bodrum and the coastal landscape. Throughout the city known as spoils are to be seen, these are parts of ancient columns and other ornate components that were used in later centuries to build and obtain remained.
The most famous attraction of Bodrum is the castle of St. Peter, it lies on a small peninsula in the harbor of the city. This medieval castle was built in the 15th Century by the Knights of St. John built and is almost completely intact. It now houses the Museum of Underwater Archaeology of the city. This displays artifacts from all periods, which were salvaged from the seabed and is one of the most famous museums in Turkey.
So there are several boat wrecks and numerous ancient everyday objects are seen. To the city’s harbor also extends the shopping and entertainment district of Bodrum. Its most famous street, the Cumhuriyet Caddesi, a pedestrian zone with many small cafes and bars. But numerous jewelry shops and leather shops dominate the skyline and attract locals and visitors.
Bodrum town has its own beach and just two miles from the center has removed the bay of Gumbet lies with its beautiful sandy beaches. These also provide ideal conditions for diving and snorkelling around the underwater world to explore the region.
