This millennial reign has no other geographical settings, diversity, interesting places, but every one of its regions provides towns or villages with their own characteristics and different, mysterious streets, typical restaurants, markets a particular effervescence, special monuments for construction or its symbolism, museums with collections unknown landscapes that never end … Saudi Arabia never ceases to amaze! To discover this country there is nothing like going to meet its inhabitants, learn their way of life, participating in festivals, see them in their taverns, filling their eyes with their color and sun.
We know that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is not fully open and unrestricted Western tourism therefore does not issue visas except for scientific or cultural reasons (it has been created in the country a special agency for tourism “archaeological and cultural”) or organized groups. The easiest way to get outside of these alternatives is through the invitation of a citizen “host” getting the “visit visa”. Obviously the easiest way to visit the country for reasons of “business” or being a Muslim and travel for “religious”. We should also know that we can only visit Mecca and Medina if we are Muslims.
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has more than 20 domestic airports and one international 3, the Prince Mohammad Bin Abdulazis Airport is in the city of Medina and also receives and dispatches international flights but is only for Muslims. The international airport of Riyadh “King Khaled” is the largest in the country and near the airport “King Fahd” of the city of Damman, are the two largest airports in the world in terms of square meters (or km2) that they occupy. Riyadh airport links the country with major airports in the five continents, is 35 km from the capital and taxis and limousines make the journey to the center of the city in about 30 minutes.
Many hotels offer shuttle service from the airport to the hotel. You can rent a car at the airport but we know that the laws are very strict when it comes to traffic accidents are concerned (immediate imprisonment) and that women can not drive on motorways.
Air travel within the borders of the country is very efficient and rates are available but the country has a good network of roads, many of them paved and the car and the bus are a good way, if we have time, deep knowledge of the country, except that our stay coincide with the pilgrimage to Mecca and the flood of pilgrims is enormous.
The railway network covers only the Riyadh-Dammam route passing through Hofuf, Darhan and Abqayq. Taxis, like many things in this realm, are very expensive, we must take this into account and used only in cases of real need and within the city limits.
The major cities of Saudi Arabia are Riyadh, the capital, Jeddah, Mecca, Medina, Dammam and Taif by the number of inhabitants, their economic or religious significance, but many other places offer a must for the tourist wonders a spirit of discovery or for those looking simply to rest and change of air.
Accommodation within Saudi Arabia has a huge amount of luxury hotels, all major hotel chains are present to accommodate not only businessmen. The shelter system or budget accommodation exists but only for men, women are the best international hotels. Even men should follow the customs of the shelter, a little tight in the West.
We must remember that this country is governed by the law of the Koran and that is the most conservative of the region. Despite the ongoing exchange with the West by the number of businesses that are closed daily, its inhabitants still feel the presence of the alien as too invasive.
