Gibraltar


The town of Gibraltar is a British city in the Regency style of the 18th Century. It was built on the ruins of a Spanish town in the 15th Century, built in turn on the ruins of a Moorish city from the 12th Century stand.

St. Michael’s Cave is located 300 m above sea level. d. level and belongs to the most interesting sights Gibraltar. The cave was known to the Romans for their spectacular stalactites and stalagmites. Leonora’s Cave and Lower St Michaels Cave, where concerts and ballets are performed today, belong to the same cave complex. The Upper Galleries in 1782 from stone and old cannons and images of the Great Siege (1779-1783). Apes in the home of the famous Barbary apes, which in reality are not apes but tailless macaques.
The Gibraltar Museum prehistoric tools and ornaments are on display, including a replica of the Gibraltar skull, the first Neanderthal skull was found in 1848 in Europe. Finds from the Phoenician, Greek, Roman, Moorish, Spanish and British history are also visible: a collection of weapons the years 1727-1800, a scale model of the Rock in 1865 and much more. The museum building was a spectacular and complete Moorish bath house from the 14th Century built.

Furthermore, the Moorish castle dungeon, the interesting (14th century): the Shrine of Our Lady of Europe (until 1462 a mosque, then from a chapel) with the image of the Patroness of Gibraltar from the 15th Century, the old Nun Well, a Moorish cistern; Parsons Lodge Battery (1865) on the Rosia Bay, the Rock Buster, a 100-ton gun, and the Garrison Library (18th century), the Trafalgar Cemetery, the Alameda Gardens ; of Europa Point, which is exactly 26 miles from Africa is removed, and the almost completely preserved city walls, dating in part from the Moorish period.

Beautiful is also a chairlift ride to the summit of the rock, stopping at the Apes Den. The Convent, a Franciscan monastery from the 16th Century and the Governor’s residence, is another popular destination. One can also admire the treasures of the churches. Another fascinating tour (Fri 10.30 clock) leads at first along the city walls and follows the stages of the Mediterranean OHaras Battery (highest point of Gibraltar) on the eastern cliffs and the southern slopes of the western side of rock.

Gibraltar has five beaches. On the east side of Eastern Beach, Catalan Bay and Sandy Bay in the south, where the rock is very steep and there are few parking spaces. Little Bay, a pebble beach, and Camp Bay / Keys Promenade are on the West Coast.
