Newfoundland Iceland

The majority of the population and the bustle of the island focus on the Avalon Peninsula in the east. The provincial capital and fishing town of St. Johns is situated on a natural harbor, surrounded by hills. In the fishing village of Quidi Vidi is one of the oldest (European) houses in North America. Small but interesting is the Newfoundland Museum. Canadian paintings and sculptures are on display at the Arts & Cultural Centre.


The coast of Newfoundland has to offer in the summer a number of interesting boat trips. There are over 60 large seabird colonies along the south and east coast with over 300 bird species. In the coastal waters is home to several species of whales, often approaching the boats. The main road leading east from the beach and tidal flats of Terra Nova National Park. In Gander and Grand Falls can be seen in the hard to reach the interior book fishing trips. On the Burin Peninsula in the south is beautiful coastal villages. The Peninsula Great Northern Peninsula offers a beautiful landscape. This can be best seen in Gros Morne National Park. At the northern tip of the peninsula Lanse aux Meadows (from the UNESCO World Heritage Site considered), with its restored buildings of the first European settlements in the New World: a group of six grass houses, the year 1000 by the Vikings built were the order.

Labrador

In the almost undisturbed wilderness of Labrador can be reached best by plane or ferry from St. Barbe on Newfoundland. Day trips are offered along the coast. Longer tours can be booked through numerous outfitters and tour operators in St. Johns. Winters can be cold. Near Labrador City, there are ski slopes, cross-country skiing is possible. Goose Bay is a good starting point for nature and fishing trips to the island’s interior.
