Maryland was founded in 1634 by Lord Baltimore and was one of 13 founding states of the United States.
Where to Go
The Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historic Park stretches over 295 miles from Washington DC to Cumberland in western Maryland, where the young George Washington began his military career.
The canal was once an important trade route. The mule towpath is now a popular hiking and cycling. The large resort of Ocean City attracts visitors with a wide white sand beach, a 5 km-long waterfront, stands and rides, tram rides, boat rides and opportunities for deep sea fishing and diving. Muddy Creek Falls is located near Deep Creek Lake in Garrett County. The Carroll Country Farm Museum is still a working farm from the 19th Century in the vicinity of Westminster. In the old Protestant Old Trinity Church in Church Creek are still held religious services.
Baltimore
Baltimore, Maryland’s largest city, is a busy port city. The restored Inner Harbor district attracts many tourists. Baltimore has a cosmopolitan population of over 2.5 million, still a pleasant, village-like atmosphere.
The frigate Constellation, the first ship of the U.S. Navy (1797) and the oldest floating ship in the world, lies at Pier 1 of the Inner Harbor at anchor. are in the 1.2-hectare area and the World Trade Center, the National Aquarium, Maryland Science Center and two pavilions with shops banks and restaurants. The open-air amphitheater is held each year, a street artist festival.
A few minute boat ride away is the star-shaped brick Fort McHenry National Monument, the 1814 bombing of the impetus for the composition of the national anthem The Star Spangled Banner was. Very close to the Charles Center is 8.8 ha, offices, skyscrapers, high-ways, fountains and plazas, including the Morris Mechanic Theatre. Also close to the Baltimore Arena and Festival Hall is taking place in the hockey games, music concerts and other events. Among the museums, the Baltimore Museum of Art (numerous post-Impressionist works), the Walters Art Gallery and the City Life Museum, a block with buildings that the city life of the 19th Century represent, well worth seeing. Mount Vernon Place, houses and places 19th Century, and many cultural institutions, such as the Maryland Historical Society and the Peabody Conservatory of Music. Here is also the Washington Monument, from which there is a good panoramic view. The Fort McHenry National Monument in summer theater special military parades and military ceremonies.
Annapolis
Annapolis, the state capital, has an attractive marina, the impressive U.S. Naval Academy and beautiful contemporary architecture.
Frederick
Frederick is a city with beautiful brick buildings and parks. In and around Frederick, there is a lot to visit.
The Gambrill State Park is located west of the city with the Catoctin peaks an excellent panoramic view. The Camp David Presidential Retreat near Thurmont is the traditional holiday destination for U.S. president. The public has no access, but the landscape in the surrounding Catoctin Mountain Park is just beautiful. The Cunningham Falls State Park is nearby.
Other attractions include Maryland’s Smith and Tangier Sound Iceland, home of the fishermen of the Chesapeake Bay, famous for its oysters, clams and crabs.
