Pleasures of a traditional menu
The most popular dishes in the Costa Rican cuisine are: married (rice, beans, shredded beef, salad, cabbage and fried banana), the pot of meat (beef soup, banana, maize, cassava, taro and shallots) bean soup (black beans with poached eggs) and picadillo (meat stew with vegetables). Among the appetizers are: the roosters (filled tortillas), cakes (with meat and vegetables), fixed (sandwich bread) and the famous and delicious bread from cassava, which can be tasted in the San Jose street stalls. Costa Rica’s coffee is of excellent quality.
The Costa Rican cuisine is one of the greatest pleasures you can give yourself to reach Costa Rica. Indian tradition has been present in the typical food of the central valleys, the ancient sacred corn and cocoa ancestral gods today, we provide, a wide variety of succulent dishes. Creole cake, pork tamales, corn tamales, tamale baked, pies, porridge are some traditional menu items Costa Rica. The pot of meat, minced vegetables, roosters, the aguadulce, the Chinchivi, chocolate, rice and beans complement the popular foods of the central valleys.
The tamales, made with ground corn flour and stuffed with rice, pork, or chicken, is a typical dish of Costa Rica. The tamale is wrapped in banana leaves and boiled in water before serving. Families tend to cook the tamales at Christmas time especially.
Some provinces have their own traditional recipes, like the Lemon case, where you can taste the “rice and beans (rice and beans with coconut milk), bread bon, rum don (beef and vegetables with fish and coconut milk) spicy or “patio” (meat-filled pastry). In Puntarenas, on the other hand, it is customary to eat seafood. This food can also be purchased at any area of the country.
You can not miss the coconut caramel to sweeten any palate, rice pudding and fruit salad.
The country virtually stops at Easter and the days between Christmas and New Year holidays often unofficially considered, especially in San Jose.
The St. Joseph’s Day is 19 March and is celebrated only in the capital, while the Day of Our Lady of the Angels (patron saint of Costa Rica) takes place on 2 August.
Juan Santamaría Day (11 May) commemorates the national hero who helped to expel William Walker in 1856, and Columbus Day (October 12), as in the rest of America is a national holiday.
January
January 1 – New Year.
First two weeks of January – Fiestas de Palmares, includes food, carnival, races, bingo, bumpers and more. Coffee Cup, a tennis tournament held in the Costa Rica Country Club with international participants under 18 years.
Mid-January – Feast of Santa Cruz, including religious procession, rodeo, music, traditional food and dancing.
Week of January 15 – Feast of Alajuelita, honoring the Black Christ of Esquipulas, the patron saint of Alajuelita, with a parade of carts, the Cross procession Alajuelita and more.
February
First week of February – Livestock Show in San Isidro del General, are parties to industrial and agricultural fairs, exhibitions, bulls and more.
Last week of February – Carnival of Puntarenas. A full week of fun in the sun. Little Devil’s Party, one of the few Indian festivals, held in Boruca Indian reservation near Curre. (The date varies)
March
Day Bootes. Held in San Antonio de Escazú the second Sunday in March. Do not miss the colorful parade of carts and the blessing of animals and crops. Bring your camera.
March 19 – Day of St. Joseph, patron of the capital.
April 11 – Juan Santamaría Day, honoring the national hero who died in 1856 at the Battle of Rivas against William Walker.
1 May – International Workers Day.
June 29 – Day of San Pedro and San Pablo. Some are made of a religious procession.
Mid July – Fiesta de la Virgen del Mar, held in Puntarenas and Playa del Coco, with sailing and boat parade.
July 25 – Annexation of Nicoya.
August 2 – Virgen de los Angeles.
August 15 – Mother’s Day.
September 15 – Independence Day.
October 12 – Day of Cultures. In lemon is celebrated with a carnival.
November 2 – Day of the Dead.
December 8 – Feast of the Immaculate Conception.
December 25 – Christmas.
25 December 31 – various activities are developed in San Jose.
