The festival calendar is governed by a Spaniard old partition the year into two cycles, directly related to the crops. The cycle of summer and winter cycle have their own general festivities, but then every location has its own regional celebrations, employers and themes. In Asturias there are many parties classified as regional tourist interest, and three of them, of International Tourist Interest. They are particularly famous Sella Descent of the Festival of Canoes, which takes place in August in Arriondas and fills this town visitors and tourists, the Feast of Flowers, the first Saturday in June, and San Juan Degollao in August, both in the town of Abandames.

The winter season begins, like other Spanish regions, with Christmas, and culminates with the Carnival, in Asturias is often called Antroxu. The carnivals allow participants in the festival free of their problems through the joy and abandon, especially ahead of the arrival of Holy Week, a time of meditation and spirituality. The foreword is Antroxu Thursday Comadres, when women get together to have fun. These carnivals are typical peculiar characters like the ragged, the pro bono or antroxos. In the town of Avilés takes place on the Riverside International Descent and Galiana Street, the street is filled with water and foam to allow the lowering of the particular “craft”, crew and entourage, receiving the water thrown from balconies.

For its part, the cycle of summer festivals are many more and more varied, due mainly to good weather that allows street celebrations. At Easter we celebrate the Feast of Bollu in Aviles, and as early as June, the bonfires of San Juan are the starting signal for the hundreds of festivals that fill the months of July, August and September. San Roque, Llanes and Tineo, the Feast of the Shepherd in Cangas, the Cider Festival in Nava, the Feast of painted eggs in Pola de Siero, the download of Our Lady of Mount Caramel in Cangas del Narcea, the Peoples’ Day Tineo in Asturias and the Feast of Brana of Aristebano Vaqueira also be regional tourist interest parties, make up a summer schedule that leaves no room for boredom.

Finally, we must mention events like the Apple Festival in Villaviciosa in October, the perfect place to enjoy the best cider and all the fun, but above all we must mention the famous Semana Negra de Gijon. This cultural event has been held since 1988. Takes place in early July and has been deeply rooted among the inhabitants of the city. These are days of cultural activities, film and music related to the thriller genre, and for which are delivered internationally important literary awards, with the assistance of the best writers and experts from around the world.
