40 years ago, the General Assembly of the United Nations called for the establishment of the Programme of United Nations Volunteers (UNV). Since then, hundreds of thousands of UN Volunteers have contributed to our overall mission, working with many organizations, programs and United Nations agencies and missions of peacekeeping and special political missions. I commend these dedicated volunteers for their dedication.

I also welcome the significant increase has occurred in recent years of online volunteering, connecting people, professionals, students, housewives and people with disabilities around the world and gives them the opportunity to contribute to the development and the United Nations work. Online volunteering, which is still relatively new, has great potential and encourage all partners to try to see what more can be done to realize the possibilities of Internet.
